Dilemma of the Telecom Industry Pakistan

How foriegn employers make us work

How foriegn employers make us work

How is it that the most blooming industry in Pakistan one year, becomes the source of the most job cuts in the market the next. Telecom companies are slaughtering each other and the insanely low call rates you are getting these days, are a source of many engineer’s jobs. Cut throat competition in the industry means every company has to keep thier rates competitive, lowering thier revenues. This means cutting back costs to keep profitable, meaning letting people go…. Wait a minute, there goes my job!!

Intenational telecom vendors such as Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola and Nokia-Siemens run the show for our telcos behind the scenes. They deploy and manage thier networks and also do thier other dirty biddings. These companies have been hit by recession in the international market and they bring thier “manhoosat” to Pakistan….

These companies have been unleashing thier badmaashi on local employees for quite some time. An example for it, they refuse to hire engineers as employees, instead they keep them on contract so that they can more easily dump them if need be. It is very unfortunate that the same engineers running the company are bullied by the company itself in this way.

Engineers are a product of four years of hard work and rigorous study, all for what, to be treated as such even when they run the whole show. Pakistan is no short of talent, it could be the start of another Alcatel, Motorola or Nokia right from here. All that is needed is the initial step, entrepreneurship. The rest is already in its place. Experienced engineers, and energetic fresh graduates are readily available, more importantly, they need such a local vendor company to give them jobs too!!

Why is it that we prefer to work under others?? I hope to see such companies of Pakistan in the near future. Beware then Alcatel, Motorola, Nokia-Siemens etc, you will all be under serious threat. The abysmal employment statistics call for new beginnings, i just hope there are enough leaders of ours who can answer this call.
