Electricity with no wires !!

by Saeed Khan on September 17, 2009

bulb hands Electricity with no wires !!Witricity is a word which may not be familiar to you. It is actually the combination of two words, Wireless and Electricity. So i think you already got the idea what witricity is. Well YES !! But let me mention here that it is not the transmission of electricity but actually transfer of it. We dont use whole word ‘Wireless Electricity’ because its too long, you can save time by just saying Witricity. In 1891, an American electrical engineer, a mad genius, Nikola Tesla actually made an early version of fluorescent bulb to glow with no wires connected to it and claimed that electricity can flow through air with two metal sheets on either side of it. That was the start of witricity. In 2007, MIT scientists were able to glow a 60W bulb at a distance of 7 feet. Trust me, this idea will totally revolutionise the electronics industry. You wont be needing any wires in the future i can bet. Also, it will open a whole new field for Electrical engineers. *cheerz*

This phenomenon is actually based on Electro-magnetism and magnetic coupling. You see, we all studied in our Fsc/A levels that we can create magnetic field via time varying electric field. Similarly vice versa. This technique is used in transformers. Same technique is also being used here. All you have to do is, resonate a coil on a particular high frequency. When current will flow through it, it will produce time varying magnetic field. At some distance, place a coil resonating with exactly the SAME frequency. That magnetic field will produce electric field and there you go … no wires ! It is not that simple though because scientists have been working on this for very long time like 100 years but then due to complications, they kept on delaying it. Still, it has some limitations. Like distance is a main factor. Your receiving coil must be within range of 2-3 meters . And about efficiency ? Well 40-45% which is equivalent to that of batteries.

An idea of Witricity

But plus point is, it is totally harmless. No radioactive waves or anything hence no tumours. If you think it is harmful, then you should also stop listening to radio because it is the same thing. Just radio waves. It has many benefits. E.g. in medical field, when you place a catheter(medical instrument related to heart) in a person’s body, after few years, you have to recharge it. So you have to extract it again. But if you use this technique, just a receiving device in catheter and there you go.  Whenever you need to recharge it, just turn the primary coil on and stand near it. It will recharge. You can watch television without wires, you can recharge your electric car (which are not yet here in Paksitan), you can recharge your laptop with it, you wont have to wake up in middle of a night just to plug in your mobile to charge it and also just insert rechargeable cells in a TV remote and trust me, your remote will expire before your rechargeable cells. Isn’t technology beautiful ?

I wonder someday i`ll be using my PC without a chord and the mess behind the table ….but from what i know , the efficiency despite being better than the battery still is`nt great , and for us , the efficiency is going to be a big problem !!!!

Salman Asghar September 17, 2009 at 1:27 pm

wao.. i didn’t abt it!!!
dats kool!

Saeed Khan September 17, 2009 at 1:28 pm

hmmm u can use this for laptops, tv, remotes n stuff like that
jo internal wiring hoti hai, keep it that way :p

Naveed Paracha September 17, 2009 at 1:36 pm

Good work; usually research work gives an idea on such of demonstration happening all across… and this one is also a nice work about ‘WiTricity’ the ability to provide electrical energy to remote objects without wires using oscillating magnetic fields.

But still we have to wait to get rid of chords to enjoy the wireless home/office life… may be next generation or next to next generation wud enjoy this…

haaris September 17, 2009 at 1:42 pm

Naaaiiiice i dint know about it
rather i was thinking of my fyp related to something like that :p

Usama Karim September 17, 2009 at 1:47 pm

Saeed you have done invaluable research i hope you do something more in this regard

Saeed Khan September 17, 2009 at 2:12 pm

guys its an article not thesis ! i did so that all of u can understand !!

ali September 17, 2009 at 2:19 pm

very nice topic indeed. And at the guy who said it is invaluable search please dont ruin others work like this. If you can bring better stuff than this then do it but dont criticise for the sake of criticism

Hassan September 17, 2009 at 2:37 pm

This is an article and it is usually made to convey message or spread it. Not to go in depths like how it is exactly made ! e.g E=mc^2 or bla bla
nice article author. good work !
and agreed with ali. do it, dont spoil !

link exchange seo September 17, 2009 at 3:57 pm

wat an idea sir ji

Hassan September 17, 2009 at 5:23 pm

man i haven’t read the article but it’s already in the market………..

Saeed Khan September 17, 2009 at 5:29 pm

it is being used in very few low power consuming applications but normally it cant be used yet cuz of not gud effciency.

Hassan September 17, 2009 at 5:39 pm

dude i can go and buy wireless chargers… that can charge all my mobile phones and laptops and other household stuff…..well that’s what they said on bbc technology program…i forgot the name of the program damn

Saeed Khan September 17, 2009 at 5:59 pm

that must be something else cuz u just search about witricity and all u get is, no range !!! search on youtube yourself !!
my professor is doing project on wireless mobile charging :p
n wat u talking abt can be, well the way signals are transmitted in ur case are via induction ! but in this case, its all about resonance !!
well it CAN be true !! cannot be too …. will have to search abt it !

Saeed Khan September 17, 2009 at 6:20 pm

n one more thing, can ya run ur TV, computer, projector, juicer or anything with ur wireless watever ? nope u cant !!
just think witricity as current without wires

ayesha September 17, 2009 at 11:27 pm

witricity
nice han :)

Hishaam Bin Masood September 18, 2009 at 3:08 am

nice article dude!

Hassan September 18, 2009 at 11:27 am

yaara who gives a damn about wires………..bijli to sasti mile wires phir dekhi jain gi……………..they should stop researching wireless tech and find ways to capture the electricity produced by lightning

Saeed Khan September 18, 2009 at 11:42 am

US doesnt have electricity problem…
we have, let us deal with that :p
why should they lag behind cuz of us
n this is indeed very important !! u wont understand now at ur age

Hassan Khan September 18, 2009 at 2:15 pm

dude u know we are sort running out of oil in next 100 years
if nothing better comes along everyone will be fudged up

so find ways to produce more efficient energy using quantum physics or as i said earlier lightning…………..

Saeed Khan September 18, 2009 at 2:27 pm

why dont u stop driving cars n implement buses in cities …. that’ll save oil bro

Hassan Khan September 18, 2009 at 2:30 pm

lol man i don’t have a car i don’t use buses…i’m a cyclist, but ok if i start saving oil we might save oil for 100 more years……….what after that………long term thinking bro

Saeed Khan September 18, 2009 at 2:32 pm

so u mean we should leave everything n start working for oil thingy ?
lame !

Hassan Khan September 18, 2009 at 2:35 pm

no man…to hell with oil…..oil can go to hell………ok peace out no more arguments u win go make witricity and have fun

Saeed Khan September 18, 2009 at 2:37 pm

trust me i was abt to say ‘u win’ but thanks anyway :p
