'The Friday Times' plays 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' with Pakistani People !!!

by Sabih Mazhar Siddiqi on October 13, 2009

I googled the words ‘corruption in Pakistan’ and i stumbled upon an old article titled ‘What is hidden in the minds of people of Pakistan?’ by Muzaffer Hussain. It was posted at http://www.hvk.org/. This is an organization for the promotion of Hindu nationalism. This article was published on May 25, 2001.

124674435 e9132bd0201 300x286 'The Friday Times' plays 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' with Pakistani People !!!

The writer says that the show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ has become very popular in Pakistan. People have started demanding that such a show should be started by Pakistan too. He ‘mocks’ that people in Pakistan copy the style of Amitabh Bachan. Like how he says ‘Lock kia jaye?’and ‘Akhri Jawab’ have become a part of daily transactions in Pakistan. He mentions that there was an article by Jahid Hussain in the April 27,2001 issue of the ‘Friday Times’ in which he wrote that he asked a question to ten citizens of Pakistan like Amitabh asks a question to select the person who would play. Jahid Hussain wrote that he asked these ten people to arrange the following problems in order of their intensity.

Kashmir, Law and order, Employment and Education.

Jahid Hussain wrote that people rated Employment as the biggest problem. Then came Law and order. After that came Education and in the last came Kashmir. Jahid Hussain further wrote that only those who want to assume power in Pakistan rate Kashmir as the most important problem and the common public considers other things more important. This information is used by the author of this article to convey to the hindu population that the Pakistanis are not interested in Kashmir and would be least bothered whichever state gets it. Encouraged by the popularity of this letter ‘The Friday Times’ published a full length article in which they asked questions to the Pakistanis and asked them to send in their Replies. In a sense, they played ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ with the Pakistanis as they claim it.

These questions were

Q1. Who is the most corrupt person in Pakistan?

1. Leader 2. Cricketer 3. Film Actor 4. The Military

Q2. What sort of government you prefer?

1. Democracy 2. Dictatorship 3. Military Rule

Q3. If you are allowed to go out of Pakistan, where would you like to settle?

1. Saudi Arabia 2. Turkey 3. Europe 4. America

Q4. Which currency would you trade in?

1. Dinar 2. Riyal 3. American Dollar 4. Takka (Bangladesh)

Q5. Who do you think is the least corrupt leader?

1.Ayub Khan 2. Benazir Bhutto 3. Zulfiquar Ali Bhutto 4. Zia ul Haq

Q6. Who is responsible for the backwardness of Pakistan?

1. Political leaders 2. Generals 3. Mullahs

Q7. Which profession should be followed to become a crorepati in Pakistan?

1. Engineer/Doctor 2. Scientist 3. Soldier 4. Industrialist

The answers

The author claims that these answers were based on the feed back sent by Pakistani readers to them.

1. People claimed that the military was the most corrupt. After that came the politicians. Then the cricketers and after that the film actors.

Obviously, the indians have never left an opportunity to spill dirt on Pakistan. This was the time in which Musharraf was in power. So obviously they had to say this but we all know this can’t be the truth. The military can be a lot of things but it can’t be corrupt.

2. 95% people gave top preference to Democracy. The rest 5% were divided between monarchy and military rule.

This result was kinda expected as at that time the indians had to promote a sense of revolt in the Pakistanis against the then military rule. But what if you were asked the same question today. What would you say?

3. 75% would go to America, 20% to Europe and 5% would goto Saudi Arabia while no one prefers Turkey.

The author exploits the fact that so many people want to move to America but fail to because of the Visa and money issues. He says that due to the insecurity in Pakistan people are not willing to live their and this is proved by the large number of Visa applications. He says people of Pakistan spend Lakhs of Rupees on Visa processes while they could do good business in Pakistan with this money. Sadly this is a true fact as people are attracted towards other countries more than our own. Engineers, Doctors and all those with good education, tend to fly off to other countries in search of recognition and wealth leaving their homeland. People don’t try to improve Pakistan’s standards, they search for better standards in other countries.

4. People gave full confidence to American dollar. After that came Dinar and then Riyal. However no one preferred dealing in Takkas.

I would say if Pakistanis did choose these options they are pretty intelligent people. After all who would want a ‘Takka’.

5. The people of Pakistan gave the verdict that Z.A.Bhutto was the least corrupt leader while they judged BB as the most corrupt one.

Interesting answer. The current government got the win because of BB. If the people of Pakistan did think she was the most corrupt, then maybe people did cast votes out of sympathy.

6. Most people thought that Mullahs or Maulvis are the ones responsible here. They said that Mullahs didn’t have a role in the creation of Pakistan. Some people also thought that corrupt politicians and selfish traders are responsible for this.

Sadly, maybe this is the truth. Maybe Islam has been used as a tool to keep Pakistan from things these Mullahs thought were not going to be benefiting for their cause. I feel they have been selfish over the course of our small history and they could have played a huge role in making Pakistan an Islamic and welfare state which they did not.

7. This is what he wrote about the answer of Pakistanis

“85% readers have said that the easiest way to become a crorepati in Pakistan is to enter the army because in Pakistan with a gap of few years, the military rule has returned every time. Hence, the real owner of Pakistan are the soldiers. If somebody has his nephew, uncle or maternal uncle in the army, then his luck knows no bounds. When they will be ordered to protect the citizens, they will loot the very citizens and become crorepati. if they are sent on border, they will do smuggling and if they are appointed on the Government post, they will obtain some contract and appease their hunger for money.”

Now is that true ? Any part of it ? True, the indians have never let a chance to spill dirt on Pakistan and its pride go waste. The good thing is, their tries are mostly transparent…

He ends the article by stating that in Pakistan the most demanded indian product is ‘Indian Motion Pictures’, after that comes ‘Paan’, then come ‘Sarrees’ and the fourth one is ‘Indian Mithai’.

He states the aim of his article in its last line saying that the letter from Jihad Hussain has given the opportunity to Pakistanis people to look inside their own minds.
