Edhi won the top UN prize for non-violence.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, has decided, following the unanimous recommendation of the International Jury, to award the 2009 UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence to the following two laureates, dividing the $100,000 amount of the Prize equally between them, UNESCO Reported.

The prize is shared between François Houtart (Belgium) and Abdul Sattar Edhi.

Abdul Sattar Edhi run Edhi foundation which is a NON Profit organization that has been in the business of providing social services like medical care, emergency services, air ambulances, burial services, mental habitats, old homes, child welfare services, abused women safe houses and training facilities for the disadvantaged.

Abdul Sattar Edhi established the first clinic in 1951.

François Houtart an ardent promoter of North-South cooperation and founder of the Tri-Continental Centre, a non-governmental organisation renowned for its work on development issues, was honoured for his life-long devotion to world peace, intercultural dialogue, human rights and promotion of tolerance. A life-long human rights defender, he has contributed significantly to advancing inter-faith and inter-cultural dialogue.

 Dedicated to advancing tolerance in the arts, education, culture, science and communications, the prize was created in 1995 on the 125th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi thanks to the generosity of Indian writer and diplomat Madanjeet Singh, a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.

It is awarded every two years to individuals or institutions for outstanding contributions towards its goals. Previous laureates include Myanmar Nobel Peace Prize laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen.
